Oprah: After The Show, 10/29/02 (Oxygen Network)

Question: What was your favorite movie to film?
Oprah: You mean in terms of one or two?
Emma: For me definitely the second one cause we knew all the people, we knew the cast, we knew the crew, we knew the director and we knew what we were doing, which is good.
Oprah: So in the first one you were trying to find your way too?
Emma: Uh huh
Question: This questions for Emma. Are you as smart as Hermione Granger?
Emma: I wish. I definitely wish. But probably not.
Oprah: But you were saying the difference between you and the character is that you are far more athletic and far more stylish obviously. Hermione would not be wearing this today. Far more stylish and far more athletic.
Emma: Yeah
Question: This is for all of you. If you were to receive a Hogwarts letter, would you go to Hogwarts? For real?
Dan: Yeah!
Question: So youd all go?
Rupert and Emma: Yeah!
Dan: Yeah, Id run!
Oprah: Like wouldnt you? I mean I would even go. Id even give up my day job for that!
Question: I wanted to know for that snake scene, was all of it green screen or just most of it?
Dan: It was all there. Obviously the snake wasnt there but the surroundings were all absolutely there.
Question: Is it true that youre scared of spiders?
Rupert: Yeah, I am. Yeah. Even rubber ones.
Oprah: Even rubber ones Zack. We are pretty clear on that. He is scared of spiders. So when he was doing that, he wasnt even really having to act that much cause he is really scared of spiders. But he loves slugs.
Question: This is for all of you. What was the first thought that came to mind when you were asked to play in the movie?
Oprah: Okay thats a very good question. Like did they tell you right away? You audition and then they say youve got it?
Emma: Well, Rupert and I went for the auditions together and we just thought it was like another one of the auditions. Wed done like seven or eight. And then David Heyman and Chris Columbus sat us down and said youve got the part.
Oprah: Okay if youve done seven or eight, by the time youre doing five youre thinking I must be pretty good. Were you thinking that?
Emma: Never. Seriously. My parents had always said Dont expect to get it because theres like so many people going for it and everything. So when I got it I was just like Oh my God!
Dan: Cause we all auditioned together.
Oprah: So after you were discovered sitting there minding your own business, you go and you have the meeting. So did you then audition?
Dan: I auditioned(To Rupert and Emma) I didnt audition, did I? How many You went seven or eight times. I think I went five or six times. I started
David Heyman: (In audience) Three or four
Dan: Oh right. Okay.
Oprah: So how did it work, Dave?
David: Dan came out and read and went through a few auditions/meetings with Chris Columbus and myself alone. And then what we didits a chemistry thing. You wanted the group to work well together. So then we tried different combinations, with different Rons, different Harrys, different HermionesAnd when we saw this combination it was very clearly the right one.
Oprah: Really? Okay. So you were told immediately?
Rupert: Yeah, I was with Emma. We had no idea why we were there.
Oprah: And they said what?
Rupert: They just said that were gonna be in the film. And it was amazing. It was so cool. That was my first thoughtcool.
Oprah to Dan: And what did you think? You knew your life was gonna change cause everybodyI think its amazing that you hadnt even thought about like Im probably The Harry Potter before this happened, hadnt even thought about acting?
Dan: Id done a bit of acting before but not obviously anything this huge. So when I actually got the part, I just cried. It was like the mostsort of like defining moments of my life. Just unbelievable.
David: Where were you?
Dan: Thank you. I was in the bath at the time.
Oprah: You were in the bath?
Dan: Yeah. I was in the bath and I just started to cry. It was just unbelievable.
Oprah : And how were your parents? You were saying that youre parents are such cool people. You said that to me during the commercial break. Loves his parents cause theyre such cool people. And your parents were happy for you obviously cause they had to agree that you were gonna do it.
Dan: Yeah, so thrilled it was just like amazing.
Question: What was it like to be in the Quidditch match?
Dan: It was so cool to actually like cause so many people all across the world want to actually experience what its like to play Quidditch. And its just so amazing to actually be up there. Its really brilliant.
Question: How did your face turn to the cat face?
Emma: It was a kind of like mask thing. It was basically just a mask.
Question: I know Im gonna regret this if I didnt ask but Rupert, could I have a hug?
Rupert: Yeah. Okay.
Question: This is a question for Emma. When you were petrified, how did they make you so still?
Emma: Well it wasnt actually me.
Question: Yeah, I understand. Did they just have like a doll or was it..?
Emma: I dont know. I wasnt actually there at the time.
Oprah: Yeah, she was so petrified she wasnt there. She decided not to show.
Question: Did you do your own stunts? Like when you fell off your broom in the Quidditch scene?
Dan: Yeah. Theres some stuff that obviously has to be done by proper gymnasts but I do like probably 75 to 80 percent of my own stunts. So its cool. It rocks.
Question: What did the polyjuice potion taste like?
Dan: Nice
Rupert: Like porridge.
Dan: It was like pudding or something like that. I dont know.
Emma: It was porridge.
Dan: Or something like that. I dont know. It tasted weird but
Emma: You like everything. It was gross.
Question: How old are all of you and what grade are you guys in?
Dan: Im thirteen but we haveIm trying to work this out cause Im trying to work out what grade Bart Simpsons in and then I can work it out from there. I think Im in the eighth gradeeighth or ninth grade, I think. Im not sure. I dont know. Is that right? Does that sound right?
Oprah: Eighth or ninth grade. And the reason you dont know is?
Dan: Because in England we have like a different
Oprah: Theyre two different systems.
Dan: Yeah
Question: What about the other two?
Emma: I am twelve. Im gonna be thirteen in April. And Im in eighthninth grade?
Oprah to Rupert: And you are fourteen.
Rupert: And I think Im in the tenth grade.
Oprah: So whats your system over there? Its not numbered?
Rupert: I cant really explain it. Cause I dont really know. You know what I mean. Its different.
Oprah: You hate school that much you never even cared to find out what So what would you call itLike in London you would be considered in what?
Dan: Im in year nine, I think.
Oprah: Most of the time, you guys are working so hard. You have five hours of school or three hours of school on set?
Dan: Three hours minimum. Five hours maximum.
Rupert: We dont get homework either.
Oprah: Do you really learn a lot? If you were to go back into your regular school are you usually ahead or behind the rest of the class?
Dan: Ive done way better than I used to do. Because its one on one. Theres like, the tension you know. Theres not loads of other people.
Oprah: Which means you also cant sleep or hide behind a book or pretend youre not there.
Dan: Yeah, thats the down side.
Oprah: Okay and so youre just doing it in between shots or is there a set of certain times during the day when you have to like Now its school time or do they try to get you just whenever youre free?
Dan: Whenever Im free.
Oprah: But isnt that hard to do? Youre like in the middle of the chamber with the snakes and now youve gotta go sit and do geometry. Is it difficult to transition sometimes?
Emma: Yeah, its pretty hard when youre gonna get rushed off the set and then get rushed back on again and then youve got minutes to make and then you come back again and then you go home. And the next day Its all really confusing and its all pretty tight packed.
Oprah: But do you like your teachers on set? Do you get the same person? Is it usually just one person that teaches you everything?
Emma: Yeah
Oprah to Rupert: And do you like it better or do you just hate school so much it doesnt matter who taught ya?
Rupert: I like it more cause we dont get homework. Our times shorter as well.
Oprah: Are you excited about this second film and when do you start working on the third?
Dan: When I saw the film in the end, I was really excited about it.
Oprah: Even more than you were for the first?
Dan: Yeah. I was really excited. But it sounds like Im putting the first down. Im not. The first is really special. Im starting the third film sometime next year.
Oprah: And it takes eleven months to do them? What is the third film called?
Dan: Harry Potter Three, The Chamwhat?no!The Prisoner of Azkaban.
